Failure to wear climbing boots probably cost a young Otago University student his life in Mt Aspiring Park on Saturday.
Leonard Alexander Phease, 19, was wearing only running shoes when he fell 100m to his death down a steep rock snow gully while traversing an icy section of a track just below the Liverpool Hut at Mt Aspiring.
He was carrying his climbing boots.
