A 21-year-old man who died when the car he was driving ploughed into a concrete wall early yesterday has been named.
He was Jordan Levi Newbold, of New Plymouth.
He lost control of his car, which hit a concrete wall in Frankley Road, in the New Plymouth suburb of Ferndale, about 1am yesterday.
"It's likely that speed was a contributing factor to this tragedy," Senior Sergeant Allan Whaley said.
He was the first of three people to die on New Zealand's roads at the weekend.
Yesterday, a middle-aged Christchurch woman died when her car left Main South Road at Islington, just south of Christchurch, about 3.15pm, police said.
Her car collided with a fence before hitting a small shed, which caught fire.
Last night, one person died and another woman in her 20s suffered serious injuries to her torso and head when a car went through a fence into a paddock and rolled.
The accident happened on Birchs Road, south of Prebbleton shortly before 8.30pm.
