Fatal crash near Gisborne

One person has died and two others injured in a single car crash near Gisborne tonight.

The accident happened on Whangara Rd/State Highway 35 between Gisborne and Tolaga Bay about 6.30pm, said Police Inspector Ian Harris.

One person died when the car travelling from Gisborne crashed, he said.

St John spokeswoman Leah Grave said two other patients were transported to Gisborne Hospital.

She said one was in a serious condition and one in a moderate condition.

No other vehicles were involved and there were only three occupants in the car, said Mr Harris.

A Fire Service spokesman said brigades from Gisborne and Tolaga Bay attended the crash.

Mr Harris said traffic diversions were in place while it was investigated.
