One person has been killed after a head-on collision on State Highway 1 south of Whangarei about 2pm.
Police said two cars collided head-on on SH1 at Oakleigh shortly after 2pm.
Sergeant Simon Craig said four other people from the two vehicles were taken to Whangarei Hospital with various injuries.
The road remains partially closed as police interview people at the scene and continue their examination.
Police said the diversions on Springfield Rd and Salmon Rd would be in place at least for another two hours and motorists should expect delays.
