Fatal crash at Puhoi closes SH1

State Highway 1 north of Auckland has been closed after a fatal crash between a car and a logging truck.

One person lost their life and another received moderate injuries in the crash just north of Puhoi, at the northern end of the new northern gateway toll highway.

The New Zealand Transport Agency said several logs from the truck had blocked the road and the highway northbound - including the toll road - was closed.

Drivers have been advised to use SH16 between Wellsford and Helensville as an alternative route.

The alternative road can be accessed from the Silverdale interchange on SH1 and from the northwestern motorway through Helensville.

Southbound traffic can access SH16 at Wellsford or from Woodcocks Road at Warkworth.
