A crash that claimed the life of a Te Kaha man was a "shocker", a coroner says.
At an inquest in Whakatane last week into the death of Dean Wiki August, Coroner Wallace Bain was told Mr August had almost three times the legal limit of alcohol in his system and traces of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), a chemical component of cannabis.
He was also known to speed along the road where he lived.
Dr Bain heard evidence from Constable Michael Chelley who had carried out a scene examination on Copenhagen Rd, Te Kaha, following the crash on March 9, 2012.
Mr Chelley said Mr August was driving a Holden ute while his 14-year-old son Juli August sat in the passenger seat.
