KEY POINTS:
Police are investigating a fatal accident on a notorious stretch of road in northern Waikato this morning.
The crash happened on State Highway 2 in Maramarua at the Maxwell Road intersection around 6.30am.
Police said that a detour was in place and the road was not expected to reopen before 10am. No further details were immediately available.
The highway has claimed more than 30 lives in the past five years.
The fatal accident occurred less than half an hour after the end of the weekend road toll period in which six people lost their lives, including the parents of a five-year-old who was orphaned after the family's car collided with a freight train.
