Two dozen young racers pitted their skills against each other using wooden model cars crafted at the Henley Men's Shed in Masterton yesterday.
Stevie Brown, EquippersOut of School Care worker, said the children were part of a holiday programme and yesterday had helped create and colour small model racing cars made frompine by Henley Men's Shed volunteers.
The cars were launched from a small ramp volunteers had crafted for the morning of races at the Henley Lake facility in Masterton, Ms Brown said, and prizes were awarded to the cars that moved fastest and furthest.
Similar model racing events called Pinewood Derbys had become popular among American boy Scout groups.
Ms Brown said the young racers were aged from 9 to 13 and tomorrow were travelling to Trampoline Park in Porirua. On Monday a younger group of children from the Equippers programme had visited Lollypops Playland in Palmerston North. Another group of children, from the Connecting Communities Wairarapa holiday programme, would be helping colour paving stones at the Henley Men's Shed tomorrow using a novel paint that is only visible once wet.
