Speedster Eddie Freeman is believed to have caught up with his 348 km/h dream.
Freeman made what is thought to be a successful run to reach 355.485 km/h at the New Zealand Land Speed Record on the runway at Ohakea Air Base this afternoon. The record stood at 348.23km/h.
TheCastrol Trophy for the New Zealand Land Speed Record was held by Owen Evans and was last set in 1996, a record breaking feat that nearly claimed Evans life when he lost control of his Porsche 911 Turbo.
An elated Freeman said: "It was pretty intense. There was poor visibility and the car was vibrating but things held up well and I'm delighted."
Freeman was attempting the record in a Lamborghini Superleggera, a supercar producing 530bhp and capable in its standard specification of a top speed of 315km/h.
The car has undergone major modifications at one of the world's leading automotive tuners in the US to prepare it for the attempt - now the Supperleggera is capable of producing close to 1500 rear wheel horse power.
