Fashion has an obligation - as do we all (as individuals, tribes and society as a whole) - to do good, create change, make a difference. We live in a world where far too many women are oppressed and live as second-rate citizens. Yes, fashion can be frivolous and fun, which has its place, but why not use it as a platform to get people thinking, speaking, acting?
In this week's issue of Viva, journalist Alexander Fury explores the trend for feminism in fashion while, Simone Cipriani from the United Nations, reminds us that fashion leads to discrimination against women.
This is a complicated debate. Just remember, if you are lucky enough each morning when you get dressed to have a choice of what to wear and how you express yourself, if you have the option to look different, not conform, to be feminine and strong without any sense of compromise - then count your blessings.
