A regional disaster relief fund has donated $1 million despite criticism from the leader of Federated Farmers.
The Manawatu-Wanganui Regional Disaster Relief Fund confirmed on March 29 that the $1 million would go to a fund administered by the Red Cross and Federated Farmers.
Federated Farmers chief executive Tony St Clair said on Monday that Government money for flood victims could end up being spent on playgrounds and pony club gear.
But trust chairwoman Jill White said the $1 million was allocated on the same day Civil Defence Minister George Hawkins presented a $400,000 cheque from the Government to the trust.
"It is important that those who have generously given money for flood relief know that some funds have already been allocated," she said.
"Under the terms of the trust deed, funds can only be allocated to mayoral relief funds or to other organisations providing relief."
Meanwhile, Governor-General Dame Silvia Cartwright has visited flood-affected areas around the region.
She flew with a party from Ohakea Air Force base in an RNZAF Iroquois around the area to see the effects of the February floods.
"This trip has given me the opportunity to see the extent of the flooding and, more importantly, meet the people involved," Dame Silvia told Manawatu-Wanganui regional council staff.
She commented on the outpouring of support, not just from volunteers, but also from paid employees in organisations such as the council, the fire service and police: "This might be your job, but some of you have done much more than that."
Horizons regional council chairman Chris Lester said the visit was a boost to staff. Dame Silvia attended a reception in Palmerston North for councils, relief workers and volunteers.
