A farm worker is in Gisborne Hospital in a critical condition after the quad bike he was riding rolled over on a hillside on Waipaoa Station near Whatatutu, about an hour north west of Gisborne this morning.
The accident happened at about 8.30am.
The 64-year-old man was doing some fencing and was riding the bike up a fairly steep hillside when the accident happened, said Whatatutu fire chief Peter Clarke.
"It looked like the bike had rolled over the man and he had significant injuries to his chest and back in the accident," said a St John ambulance officer.
The ECT rescue helicopter is being serviced, so a rescue helicopter from Rotorua was called in.
