Rumours are rife in Feilding that dairy farmer Scott Guy was murdered after he destroyed cannabis crops on his farm.
Police say they are aware of the rumours but have not found any link between the 31-year-old's death and drugs.
Mr Guy was killed with a shotgun almost two weeks ago after he got out of his ute at the end of his driveway on his way to milking.
Police are still hunting his killer.
TVNZ reported last night that there was speculation in Feilding that Mr Guy had confronted gang members after finding and destroying cannabis on his farm.
But police spokeswoman Kim Perks told the Herald: "We are aware of the rumours and we will look at everything but at this stage there is nothing at all to suggest there is any link. We have had no reports from the Guy family of any drugs involved."
Mr Guy left a wife, Kylee, pregnant with a boy due in September, and a 2-year-old son.
Kylee's father, Glenn Bullock, said that while speculation over the murder was rife, he trusted police to do their job.
"There were no drugs, no bullshit and no nonsense. I don't want to comment on motive or anything at this stage, we're just letting the police do their thing," he told Hawke's Bay Today. He said the lack of leads into the murder had made the grieving process difficult for his daughter.
"It leaves things up in the air and, worst of all, it's left my daughter very frightened because this person is still out there."
She had moved to an undisclosed address, Mr Bullock said.
Police earlier said that they were yet to find any links between the death and earlier acts of vandalism on the property.
They said windows had been smashed and walls tagged with graffiti while the Aorangi Rd house was being built in January last year.
Police were also yet to establish a link with a suspicious fire of a farmhouse sitting on trailers on the property a few months earlier.
