Federated Farmers is urging dairy farmers and other employers to get their affairs in order, following a government report criticising workplace employment breaches across New Zealand.
The Times-Age yesterday reported the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment found 31 farms across New Zealand were in breach of minimum employment rights, out of 44 visited over the last four months.
The closest offending farms found near Wairarapa were in Palmerston North, Opiki, Pahiatua, Rongotea and Fielding, said the Ministry.
The Labour Inspectorate team described the frequency of breaches as "disappointing", blaming farmers' insufficient record-keeping.
In most instances farmers were issued with 28-day undertakings to put their affairs in order, but in one instance a farmer had to pay an employee $6000 for breaching the Minimum Wage Act 1983.
