Cows found comfort nestling in hay that was hurriedly removed from a hayshed after a weekend blaze destroyed two farm buildings on Ahiaruhe Road east of Carterton.
The two buildings were razed in the fire that started just after 3pm on on Sunday.
All that was left of the hayshed and implement shed was a tangled mass of warped iron, burnt hay and the charred skeleton of a tree.
Carterton deputy fire chief Wayne Robinson said fire crews used water and foam to extinguish the fire. Three fire crews from Carterton and Martinborough attended.
Mr Robinson said the fire was "well involved" by the time the crews arrived. Because the buildings were in close proximity to other buildings the fire crews had no choice but to completely extinguish the blaze rather than let it burn itself out.
The fire took half an hour to bring under control and almost three hours in total to extinguish and clean up.
The tenant renting the property had moved in only the day before the fire.
An initial investigation to establish the cause of the combustion pointed towards evidence that it was started by a child.
None of the hay was salvageable, but the buildings were insured.
Despite rain overnight and cold weather, some hay was still smouldering yesterday.
