More than 10,000 customers in the Far North have been without power this afternoon after an incident which resulted in a lines contractor being taken to hospital.
Power has been out since 1pm following the incident, which happened between Kaitaia and Kaikohe.
"There was some maintenance happening and there was an incident after which a contractor was injured," Transpower spokeswoman Rebecca Collerton told NZPA.
"He was taken to hospital but I'm not sure what the injuries were."
Ms Collerton said she understood about 10,000 to 15,000 customers had lost power.
She said they were mainly in the Kaitaia area, but a phone message from local energy provider Top Energy said the outage was affecting customers from Cape Reinga to Taupo Bay, about 60km east of Kaitaia, and a number of areas in the north Hokianga area.
Power was expected to be restored by 6pm.
