Bernice Mene found herself dancing to a new tune yesterday when she visited an Otara school as part of her volunteer work with the Project K Trust.
The netballer-turned ballroom dance queen tried a little hip hop during a visit to Sir Edmund Hillary Collegiate, which is one of four Auckland schools taking part in Project K.
The role of the trust, which was set up by mountaineer and adventurer Graeme Dingle, is to help young people develop leadership and other skills.
But yesterday it was the students teaching the mentor. Mene tried a few moves and found some as difficult as the ballroom routines she learned for the Dancing with the Stars television show.
Her visit to Sir Edmund Hillary Collegiate will be featured this weekend (One, Sunday, 8.30pm).
Mene is partnered by D'Artagnan Kennedy on the show. Although they are popular, last week the judges gave them the second lowest total.
Far cry from the foxtrot for Bernice
