KEY POINTS:
So which is more famous: the driver or the car?
Pink Floyd drummer (and hard-core car-enthusiast) Nick Mason will be driving a rare 1936 Auto Union Type C at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in Britain today.
The annual event has become a legendary showcase for classic racing cars, and attracts vehicles and visitors from all over the world. The Auto Union Type C is thought to be the most important car in Audi's collection. It has 16 cylinders, produces 387kW and can hit 340km/h flat-out, with not a seatbelt in sight.
Bernd Rosemeyer drove this Auto Union to victory in the European Championship, the German Championship and the German Hillclimb Championship. Designed by Ferdinand Porsche, the vehicle was also driven by Hans Stuck, Achille Varzi, Ernst von Delius, HP Mller and Rudolf Hasse.
Aside from being pretty handy on the drums, Nick Mason is well qualified to drive the Type C. He has a collection of 35 racing cars and has competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans five times.
