A Waikato family not only had their house ransacked by burglars, but their pets were tormented and hurt as well.
Police said the "very invasive and distressing" burglary occurred at the Meremere home of the family, which included two young children, between 8am and 3.45pm on Friday.
The offenders forced their way into the house, ransacked almost every room and took a large amount of personal and electronic property, alcohol and meat.
While there, they tormented and hurt the family's two cats and dog. One of the cats looked like it had been struck in the face, with one of its eyes closing over.
"The fact of having their house entered and items stolen is bad enough let alone knowing that the pets have been targeted as well," Waikato District Police said in a Facebook post.
