Family will not appeal tobacco verdict

The children of Janice Pou have decided not to appeal a High Court decision clearing a tobacco company of blame over their mother's death.

Kasey and Brandon Pou last month lost their bid to sue British American Tobacco for failing to inform their mother of the dangers of smoking.

Mrs Pou, of Invercargill, died of lung cancer in 2002. Her children spent four years seeking more than $300,000 from the tobacco giant.

In his verdict, Justice Lang said the dangers of smoking were well known when Mrs Pou started in 1968.

Lawyer for the pair, David Collins said they have this week made the decision not to appeal.
