The father of a Canadian backpacker who died after being severely burned by aviation fuel at an Outback party are shocked the New Zealander responsible will not stand trial over her death.
An Alice Springs magistrate found pilot Edward Lee was not criminally responsible for the burns that killed 29-year-old Cynthia Ching in 2004.
Ms Ching died of complication from burns caused after a makeshift lantern Lee was filling with the aviation fuel Avgas toppled and set her on fire.
Ms Ching's father Ralph Ching said the family did not want Lee to go to jail, but still held him responsible for the death.
