A teenager charged over his father's death is being supported by his family as they prepare for the father's funeral next week.
Colin Adams, 17, has been charged with careless use of a firearm causing the death of Brian Adams, 46, on Tuesday.
He has been released on bail with strict conditions, including a 24-hour curfew.
Defence lawyer Arthur Fairley said Colin Adams was with his family and they were supporting him.
"They're a close family, extremely close," he said, and they had described the shooting as a tragic accident.
Police said Mr Adams was shot in the back of the head by a 6.5mm rifle at his rural home in Puhipuhi, about 25km north of Whangarei.
A death notice for Mr Adams yesterday said he died as a result of a tragic accident.
He was remembered as the dearly loved husband, soulmate and best friend to wife Shona, and "dearly loved father, role model and awesome mate" of sons David and Colin. His funeral will be held in Whangarei on Tuesday.
Neighbouring farmers in Mine Rd at Puhipuhi said Mr Adams was a great family man with a heart of gold.
The keen fisherman had sold part of his farm and was building a new home further along Mine Rd.
David, 19, and Colin lived at home and worked on the family farm at weekends.
Mr Fairley said Colin Adams was unlikely to enter a plea to the charge when he returned to court on Monday, and the lawyer would be seeking a further remand.
