Family and friends of the hunter shot dead in the south Wairarapa a month ago gathered in an Auckland restaurant last night to mark his 30th birthday, as police continue to investigate who was responsible for his death.
Self-employed Auckland builder Cameron McDonald died after he was shot in the back of the head while hunting with a friend in Aorangi Forest Park, near Pirinoa, on April 7.
Police have since taken a male hunter from a separate hunting party back into the bush as part of their investigation, but a Masterton police spokeswoman said on Friday no charges had been laid.
Cameron McDonald's father Ranald told the Herald on Sunday the birthday party his son had planned before his death would continue in his memory. Some guests had travelled from overseas to attend the party, McDonald said.
The family had greeted the latest hunting death with sadness, he said.
