A fire which destroyed a suburban Auckland home early yesterday morning started in the family's laundry, where there were no smoke detectors.
Three people and a dog were believed to have escaped the house fire on Holdsworth Ave near Wesley Primary School in Mt Roskill about 2.30am yesterday.
Fire investigator Lynda McHugh said an investigation found a clothes drier's faulty motor was responsible for the blaze, which spread from the laundry to the main house.
"The house had fire alarms but the older style laundry out back did not," she said.
Ms McHugh said the family members, who were asleep when the fire started, "woke to hear the sound of glass breaking".
