KEY POINTS:
A West Auckland family got a 2am wake-up yesterday when a car spun out of control and crashed into their house.
James and Amanda Burr and their children Isabelle, 6, and Sam, 4, were sleeping when the Mazda 323 hurtled through a fence and into the corner of their Huia Rd, Titirangi, home, breaking weatherboards, windows and plaster board.
"I woke up when I heard the car spinning out and losing control," Mrs Burr said.
"We have a lot of accidents on this road so, depending on the sound you hear, you know if you should get up or not."
She told the Herald she was already throwing the sheets off when the house shook with the force of the crash.
"I knew straight away what had happened and called the police while my husband checked the kids."
When they opened the front door they found the wrecked and empty car.
A neighbour reported seeing two people running from the scene. Police dogs were used to track the pair and the driver was arrested later in the morning.
"The driver's dad did come and speak to us and told us his son would be down to see us.
"It was really good, we were happy he did that."
Mrs Burr said it was ironic that yesterday morning reflective cats eyes were put on the corner where the accident occurred.
"The council have been really good. I sent them a letter listing the number of accidents we'd had and then we had a meeting where they decided to re-align the road, so they're pretty good at trying to get it fixed."
