KEY POINTS:
The family of a British man fighting for his life after being hit in the head while out shooting rabbits are flying to his bedside.
The 21-year-old victim, who is a working exchange student from the UK, remained in a critical condition in Waikato Hospital's intensive care unit this morning.
Detective Sergeant Kevan Verry said that the student's family had been informed and were planning to travel to New Zealand immediately.
He said police found the badly injured man after being called to a rural address at Waotu, 10km south-west of Putaruru, at 11pm yesterday.
Tokoroa CIB was investigating the incident and a forensic examination of two locations was being conducted.
A number of witnesses had been spoken to and inquiries were continuing.
