Rain set to continue
In Auckland overnight 24mm of rain fell in Albany, and a heavy downpour saw 10mm fall between 2am and 3am at Auckland Airport.
Strong winds in the Hauraki Gulf were measured on Tiritiri Matangi island, with a mean wind speed of 96km/h and gusts reaching 115km/h.
In Whangaparaoa, gusts reached 105km/h and 100km/h at Manukau Heads.
The meteorologist said Aucklanders could expect today to be dry, but more showers would hit the region by midnight.
A MetService meteorologist said a rain warning was still in place for the Bay of Plenty.
He said the downpours were currently at their worst in the western Bay of Plenty and Coromandel Peninsula.
A huge 25 millimetres of rain had fallen in the last hour near Waitete Bay, on the east coast of the peninsula, and it was still raining in the area.
In the last 12 hours nearly 60mm of rain had fallen south of Taupo, and 44mm had fallen in Rotorua.
Further south, 100mm fell in cape Egmont, Taranaki in the last 12 hours, with 23mm falling in the last hour.
