The number of people officially infected with swine flu in New Zealand has dropped from six to five following a false test result.
The Ministry of Health this morning said there were five confirmed cases of influenza A (H1N1), or swine flu, and 15 probable cases and 79 suspected cases.
One of the six confirmed cases reported on Monday was confirmed prematurely before the final DNA sequencing was carried out, said Fran McGrath, deputy director of public health.
The case was back into the probable category until the sequencing was completed.
The change in numbers had no impact on the individual concerned as they have already completed treatment, she said.
An additional check was put in place to improve the quality of reporting by having ESR verify all newly confirmed cases, she said.
The last available figure put 309 people in isolation or quarantine and being treated with the anti-viral drug Tamiflu.
Meanwhile the World Health Organisation (WHO) says 21 countries have officially reported 1490 cases of swine flu.
Mexico has reported 822 laboratory confirmed human cases of infection, including 29 deaths.
The United States has reported 403 laboratory confirmed human cases, including one death.
New Zealand health authorities were continuing to maintain an emphasis on limiting the spread, Dr McGrath said.
"There is no evidence of community transmission in New Zealand - that means that to date, all of the cases have recently returned from travel in affected areas or are close contacts of cases."
