Falling tree injures Wairarapa farmer

The Life Flight rescue helicopter airlifted a Wairarapa farmer to Wellington Hospital with moderate injuries he received when a tree fell on him.

A Wairarapa farmer injured by a falling tree at Mangapakeha was airlifted to hospital on Sunday.

Life Flight crewman Colin Larsen said the rescue crew were called to the accident scene on a rural property east of Masterton about 12:15pm on Sunday.

He said the farmer, a man in his late 30s, had been chopping down trees with friends when one of the trees fell on him.

A neighbour on a quad bike helped direct the helicopter crew to a location near the accident site, where the injured man was being treated by a Masterton ambulance crew.

Mr Larsen said the farmer was stabilised and "extricated from a shallow gully that he had been pushed into by the tree".

The man had been flown to Wellington Hospital emergency department with moderate injuries.

Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter had airlifted a man to hospital from a property nearby on Thursday after he crashed his vehicle while hunting.

The man, also on his 30s, had been flown to Palmerston North Hospital with both legs broken and back injuries.
