A Featherston youngster who fell from a tree on Sunday missed out on his helicopter ride to Wellington after making a rapid recovery in the ambulance.
Life Flight's Westpac rescue helicopter was called to Featherston's Card Reserve to collect the youngster just after 3pm on Sunday afternoon.
Featherston fire brigade volunteers cleared the ground for the touchdown, but after 20 minutes on the ground crewman Colin Larsen advised the youngster had "rapidly improved" and would be driven by ambulance to Wairarapa Hospital.
Mr Larsen was not able to give any information of the nature of the child's injuries.
As an aside, the helicopter and ambulance thwarted the plans of Featherston Athletics Club stalwart Ron Hughes, who had planned to mark out the athletics track that afternoon.
