Sustainable business: A young Samoan organisation with a small membership, the Savai'i Coconut Farmers Association has adopted Fairtrade certification as a business strategy to increase members' income and to be able to access competitive international markets.
These farmers are the first producer organisation in Samoa to be Fairtrade Certified. This means that the group meets Fairtrade Standards of social and environmental performance, as well as business accountability and transparency.
The Savai'i Coconut Farmers Association is supported by its local buyer Krissy Co, the NZ ice cream company Nice Blocks, and Fairtrade Australia & New Zealand, and aims to contribute to the recovery of the coconut cream industry in Samoa, which has declined by 50% in the last 10 years.
