Ace Carterton field event exponent Alex Fafeita was in outstanding early-season form at the central league track and field inter-club meet held in Wellington on Saturday.
Fafeita (Athletics Carterton), showed he was on target for a gold medal winning effort in the hammer throw at the forthcoming national secondary schools championships when he recorded a throw of 60.18m. It was the first time he had broken the 60m mark and came after some strong training performances had indicated he was ready to produce something special.
The main aim for Fafeita in the hammer throw this season is to achieve a distance of 66.50m to qualify for the world youth championships and Saturday's performance suggested that is well within his compass.
It wasn't only in the hammer throw that Fafeita made his mark in Wellington though. In what was his first outing in the shot put for 2010-11 he came up with a put of 15.27m, better than anything he managed last season, and his best discus throw of 43.64m was also impressive.
Just when Fafeita's sister Courtnay will be back on the competitive scene is still to be determined.
One of the country's top female age group throwers in hammer throw, discus and shot put, she has recently had operations on both her feet and left knee. Original expectations were she could be sidelined for up to three months but she is recovering so well an earlier comeback is a definite possibility.
