KEY POINTS:
An Auckland school has discovered what pupils experience in a Third World country.
Year seven and eight students at Epsom's St Cuthbert's College packed into a classroom to discover what school is like for children studying at Mukupi school in Zambia.
Led by ChildFund New Zealand, yesterday's lesson crammed 100 students into a classroom - unheard of in New Zealand but a reality in Mukupi.
Students were asked to share three textbooks, a handful of pens and a few pieces of paper.
A video of the Zambian school illustrated how full the classrooms are and how little materials the children have.
St Cuthbert's involvement in the activity stems from its participation in the College Herald, a Herald publication that asks high school students to submit articles and photographs about various topics.
ChildFund sponsored two sections in the College Herald.
St Cuthbert students took part in the first section, Chains of Poverty, and teamed up with the charity organisation.
ChildFund national director Paul Brown said: "It is great that young people, like the students at St Cuthbert's, recognise their responsibilities as citizens of this country and the world, and the fact that they do have a voice."
