KEY POINTS:
Ashok Darji has owned dairies for more than 20 years and says violence is not the answer when dealing with crime.
His shop was robbed when his wife was looking after it three years ago.
"People need to understand that there is a law that defends and protects us and there are police who have the duty to do that."
He said this eye-for-an-eye approach needed to be replaced with a logic of understanding.
"We need to understand the root causes - family breakdown, drug use and youth attitude.
"Some youth find life empty and blank. Unless we, as adults, take full responsibility and show them direction this problem won't get fixed."
However, he said lower socio-economic areas needed to be patrolled more by police to ensure the safety of people.
