KEY POINTS:
A 39-year-old is in a coma after a vicious, unprovoked attack on the owner of an Auckland kebab shop last night.
North Shore police said "extreme violence" was used in the assault at All Go Kebab on Wairau Road about 11pm.
Detective Steve Pivac said the injuries suffered by the Iranian national were "horrific".
"Extreme violence has been used. It is among the worst beatings that I have seen for a long time," he said.
Mr Pivac said police found the victim of the attack with severe facial wounds and he was taken to hospital where he remains in intensive care.
" He is in a coma. His condition is stable. Urgent facial surgery will be necessary however."
The man described his attackers as two males. Police are reviewing security footage and a forensics team is examining the scene of the crime.
"The All Go Kebab premise is located next to Liquor Land in Wairau Road. We are appealing to all members of the public who were in this locality last night to contact us," Detective Pivac said.
