The 44 extras they conceded proved costly for the Wairarapa under-13 criicket team in their Harry Findlay Cup match with Wanganui at Wanganui last weekend.
Wanganui won the limited-overs encounter by 24 runs after they were dismissed for 162 in 49 overs and Wairarapa replied with 138, also scored in 49 overs.
Wairarapa won the toss and elected to put Wanganui in and they made a solid start, the opening partnership lasting 16 overs before the first wicket fell to Sam Fleming's bowling.
Of the first 55 runs scored by Wanganui 21 of them were off the bat and the rest were extras, a frustrating situation for Wairarapa.
Spinners Sammy Holmes and Martin Reisima were then introduced into the attack and they slowed down the run rate. For the next 20 overs only 48 runs were scored, and only one of those was an extra!.
During that spell Holmes picked up three wickets for 18 runs and Reisima went for just 29 runs in his 10 overs.
Fleming then came back to bowl and picked up four wickets, three of them falling to catches by wicketkeeper George Falloon.
The other Wanganui wickets fell to a sharp fielding effort by Holmes which produced a run out and a leg before wicket decision given Ben Foster.
Wairarapa openers Patrick Howard and Harry Clinton-Baker put on 19 runs for the first wicket before the latter was caught, and soon after Howard, who had made 14, went the same way.
Fleming and Fallon then settled the innings with a 37-run partnership, Fleming making 16 and Falloon 17.
With the required run rate sneaking up to between six and seven runs an over Holmes came to the crease and went on the attack, scoring 33 runs off 37 balls, aided and abetted by the solidness of Caleb Hickland.
However, the ask proved too much for Wairarapa, and when their last wicket fell at 138 they were still 24 runs short of their target.
Apart from the extras it was, however, a strong effort from Wairarapa who now go forward to the Central Districts under-13 tournament in Palmerston North on January 22, 23 and 24.
UNDER-14
The Wairarapa under-14s also played Wanganui and despite a fine knock of 53 by Daniel Ingham were beaten by 122 runs.
Wairarapa bowled well in he opening stages of the Wanganui innings but the latter took control later on and finished on a healthy 210-7.
Losing early wickets didn't help Wairarapa's cause when they batted, and while Ingham did his best to right the situation, they were all for 88 scored in 38 overs.
Extras cost U-13s dearly
