KEY POINTS:
An elderly New Zealand man who is facing historic sex charges, some concerning girls under 12, is to be extradited from Australia where he has spent two years claiming to be too unwell to travel.
Charles Kenneth Morgan, 83, was arrested while holidaying in New Zealand in 2004 but was allowed back to Australia on $20,000 bail on condition that he returned for court.
In 2005 Morgan, who lives in New South Wales, said he was too sick to return for his trial. This was despite an Australian newspaper article two years earlier about his health which ran under the headline "80, gym-fit and unstoppable".
A New Zealand judge asked Morgan to back his claims of ill-health with documentation but when he failed to do so a warrant was issued for his arrest.
It is not clear why Morgan was not immediately extradited, but the Herald understands that extradition will now take place after he was arrested in New South Wales on Monday.
