Wanganui police promise extra officers will be patrolling the city's streets for as long as it takes to quell gang tensions.
There were two violent clashes between the Mongrel Mob and Hell's Angels yesterday. Two gang members were hospitalised. One has facial injuries and the other has head wounds. Cars were rammed, windscreens smashed and there are unconfirmed reports that shots were fired.
Acting Area Police Commander, Duncan MacLeod, said Wanganui has a history of gang conflict, but it will not be tolerated and police will be working hard to make the streets safe again.
Six people have been arrested and police are talking to both gangs to try to resolve the conflict. More arrests are likely.
Mr MacLeod hoped the extra patrols will prevent any reprisals.
