'Explosive device' in car sparks alert

Specialist Defence Force staff were sent to the Bay of Islands town of Paihia to deal with a vehicle believed to contain explosives, police said today.

An occupant from the vehicle, which was in Bayly Rd, was being questioned by police.

Police said the bomb squad alert was at the Waitangi Golf Course, where what appeared to an "improvised explosive device" or IED had been found.

The vehicle at the centre of the incident had been cordoned off.
