Wairarapa senior men's bowls selector Dave Petersen is anticipating a strong showing from his team when they contest the annual inter-provincial quadrangular bowls tournament at Levin on Sunday.
Peterson knows the opposition from Wellington, Manawatu and Kapiti will be high quality but he expects the experience of the Wairarapa squad to stand them in good stead.
"We will certainly be the underdogs but I wouldn't count us out, they'll know we are there," he said.
The absence of long-time Wairarapa representative John Claydon, who skipped the Masterton team which won the final of the centre's open fours championship on Monday, will be a talking point but Peterson said it was not a case of Claydon being dropped. Rather it was a case of taking the chance to try out relatively new combinations with an eye to the inter-zone competition later in the season.
Masterton's Ian Monaghan will play the singles for Wairarapa in Levin, with Les O'Donovan (Featherston) skipping Warren Fisher (Masterton) in the pairs.
In the fours Graham Tindall (Masterton) will skip with Peter McGillicuddy (Martinborough) at two, Gary Caffell (Masterton) at three and Laurie Field (Masterton) at lead.
Also contesting their quadrangular tourney in Levin on Sunday is the Wairarapa development squad men's team which finished runners-up last year
Selector Warren Wyeth expects another bold effort from a squad which has Jamie O'Kane (Greytown) playing the singles, Richard Anderson and Scott McKenzie, both of Masterton, the pairs and Stephen Willis (Greytown), Josef Hajnos (Greytown), Clive Harper (Masterton) and Peter Gibbs (Masterton) the fours.
Experience will be key, says Peterson
