Defrocked Anglican priest John Hamilton Tovey was yesterday sentenced to 15 months' jail for indecently assaulting a young woman in Napier.
Tovey, 64, arrived in Napier in 2010 as associate priest at the All Saints parish in Taradale but left the position late the following year.
In July he pleaded guilty to two charges relating to offences between April 2014 and January 2 this year, but a charge of sexual violation was withdrawn by police.
Tovey affirmed in a letter read in the Napier District Court yesterday by counsel Jonathan Krebs: "Nothing like this has ever occurred prior to this and I am truly repentant."
Sentenced by Judge Bridget Mackintosh, Tovey revealed in the letter that restorative justice, which could have involved the offender and the victim, was not possible.
