Expect Rexs, Rovers and Spots all over at dogs' day

Every man and his dog has been invited to take part in the second Dog Day Out at Henley Lake this weekend.

Organiser Chris Garland, of Masterton South Rotary Club and Henley Trust, said the idea for the event came from a Rotary club in Christchurch.

"We're always on the look-out for community service projects and fundraising projects we can use to generate funds to apply back to the community," he said.

The first successful event was held in 2009 and attracted about 80 dogs and their families.

"Everybody had a pretty good time but I think a lot of people weren't quite sure what it was," said Mr Garland.

"All it is, really, is an opportunity for people to bring their dogs to the lake and run them through some pretty simple exercises and have a bit of fun."

The day would involve activities such as run the tunnel and and obstacle course, as well as demonstrations from VETCARE and SPCA Wairarapa.

Spot prizes and prizes for the happiest and hairiest dog would be given out, he said. More food stalls would be on offer this year, plus a ferris wheel for the kids.

Anybody with an interest in dogs was encouraged to attend, Mr Garland said. The entry fee was $5 per person or $10 per family.

VETCARE Masterton & Greytown Veterinary Clinics, Masterton District Council, K9 Wise, Masterton Seed & Pets, Chapel St Vets, PGG Wrightson, Ranchmans, More FM, Keinzley AgVet, the Times-Age, Farmlands and Hills Pet Nutrition were the sponsors.

The Dog Day Out will be held from 1pm at Henley Lake this Sunday.
