KEY POINTS:
An Auckland teacher found guilty of six sex charges involving three teenage girls will be sentenced to home detention.
Heremia Smith, 30, formerly head of Maori studies at Glenfield College on Auckland's North Shore, was found guilty in February of four charges of indecent assault and two of sexual conduct against a girl under 16.
He was also found not guilty of one count of sexual violation and seven other indecent assault charges between 2002 and 2006.
Judge Josephine Bouchier said Smith's offences warranted a two-year prison sentence, meaning home detention could be considered.
She said she would sentence him to home detention but was unable to do so today as the first address provided did not meet required criteria.
The final sentence would be delivered next month, and Smith would remain on bail until then.
A family member of one of the complainants said the home detention sentence was "gut-wrenching".
