A former Marist brother has admitted sex offences against a boy more than 20 years ago.
In the High Court at Auckland yesterday the 60-year-old, who has interim name suppression, admitted six charges of indecent assault, two of inducing an indecent act and one of sodomy involving a 12-year-old in 1980.
Justice Hugh Williams remanded him on bail for sentencing in November.
According to the police summary of facts, the offending occurred at the school where the brother taught and on school trips.
In 1994, the man was found guilty of sex offences against four other pupils around the same time and was jailed for eight years.
The man, represented by Barry Hart, told the court he wished to express his sincere and profound regret for what he had done.
Justice Williams told the man that the fact that his name had been suppressed until sentencing and that he had been given bail was no indication of the likely sentence.
Addressing the victim, now 35, Justice Williams said that he was welcome to attend the sentencing hearing.
In any event, he would ensure that the victim received a copy of his sentencing remarks. * In Dunedin, a retired Catholic priest was jailed yesterday for sexually abusing boys.
Magnus William Murray, 76, pleaded guilty in the Dunedin District Court last month to 10 charges of indecent assault, doing indecent acts and inducing indecent acts.
He was jailed for five years and ordered to pay each of his four victims $3000. He abused the boys in Dunedin and Mosgiel between 1958 and 1972.
