A former policeman has been sentenced to 280 hours community work after he pleaded guilty to his part in a scam involving hundreds of bogus drivers' licences.
Peter William Hjorring, 56, was sentenced in Waitakere District Court today after he admitted in April his role in the scam which targeted Auckland's Asian community.
During an interview with police he admitted there may have been three to four licences a week involved over an eight-month period, but his lawyer Harry Jordaan told Judge Philip Recordon that Hjorring had reconsidered those numbers and there may only be a total of eight to 10 involved.
The judge said community work was obviously more appropriate because of all the positive things involved in the case.
"But I can't help wondering how many people are involved and have been driving when they shouldn't be and what risk they are to the community."
