A former Corrections Department official has been jailed after earlier handing himself in for accepting bribes from offenders whose community work sentences he wiped.
Chanel Vern Scanlan, a former Tokoroa community work supervisor, was jailed for two years and nine months today after earlier pleading guilty to 30 counts of wilfully attempting to pervert the course of justice and five counts of corruption.
Over nine months between 2007 and 2008, Scanlan had wiped a total of 2700 community work hours of offenders.
In two cases, he accepted firewood and a $200 cash payment.
One offender had 95 of his 100 hour sentence wiped.
