Evacuation after digger smashes gas main

Several buildings were evacuated in Manukau, south Auckland, today when a digger smashed through a gas line.

Police said a commercial gas main opposite Manukau City Shopping Centre was broken by the digger about midday.

Police and firefighters closed the area and ordered several buildings to be evacuated while the leak was fixed.

Great South Road was closed for about an hour.
