Euthanasia campaigner Lesley Martin remains devoted to her cause despite her marriage becoming the latest casualty of her fight.
Ms Martin confirmed today her 22-month marriage to Warren Fulljames was over, saying the pressure of her imprisonment and her commitment to the voluntary euthanasia campaign proved too much for their relationship.
She was released from prison six months ago after being convicted of the attempted murder of her mother.
"Ultimately we were two completely different kinds people," she said of her husband today. "We identified we needed different things out of life. I am more than 100 per cent committed to the work I do with Dignity New Zealand."
Ms Martin is now awaiting a Supreme Court decision on her appeal against the conviction.
A month before the couple married she was arrested and charged with attempted murder.
Ms Martin and her 11-year-old son moved out of the couple's Taranaki home in February.
She said the past 12 months had been a "year from hell". Besides serving a prison sentence, her eldest son was seriously injured in a car crash and her brother died in April following a truck accident.
