A potentially explosive ethanol leak at Mt Maunganui yesterday took firefighters all day to clean up.
Between 4000 and 5000 litres of the volatile fuel escaped through a split in a million-litre tank but were confined to a specially designed containment system.
In Kawerau, staff at Carter Holt Harvey's Tasman Mill were evacuated after a chlorine dioxide gas leak about 9.30am yesterday.
Surrounding roads were closed until the gas dissipated. No one was hurt.
