Ericsson Stadium to be named Mt Smart again

Ericsson Stadium in Penrose will revert to its original name of Mt Smart Stadium after the Auckland Regional Council failed to find an appropriate new sponsor.

ARC chairman Mike Lee announced the name change yesterday following the expiry of communication company Ericsson's naming right sponsorship contract.

"We have enjoyed a long and successful partnership with Ericsson and we thank them for their involvement with the stadium over the last decade," Mr Lee said.

Mr Lee told the Herald that other companies had come forward as potential sponsors with similar financial packages but they did not fit the desired image that shared the council's values.

"It is therefore a natural progression to rename the stadium Mt Smart and remember the history of the site."

But he said the door was open for future sponsorship should an appropriate offer be made.
